The polish sociologist, Zygmunt Bauman, observed with high precision that “the human solidarity is the first down caused by triumph of the consumer market”. News generations of consumers grow without realizing the relation that happens between consumer and environment and, what is more worrying, repeating the same clichés from environmentalist movements.
When we choose in a conscious way avoiding exceeds and getting sustainable engagement brands, we are assuming the role that is convenient for a century XXI th consumer. It isn’t possible anymore, for example, to defend the sustainable exploitation of the Amazon rainforest without privileging the consumption of the legal beef, since official data from our own federal governmental indicate that 80% of rainforest already destroyed is from livestock. Without this information, the consumer could be eating beef with smelling burned forest.
According to the Scottish historian Niall Ferguson, 100 billions of humans have already been born on our planet since the appearance of the first hominid. Those who are alive today represent 6% of that quota. Is precisely this group – in which you and I are inserted – that will have a huge responsibility to make the more important choices of the human history. There is no doubt that we are up to the challenge. The fundamental question is: are we really interested in facing it?
Why not always the Planet doesn’t produce enough to supply the necessary to the men? The answer is: It is, ingrates, as man are, he despises the nature! However, the nature is an excellent mother. Many times, man accuses nature from what is only his own inexperience or his improvidence. The planet would produce whenever necessary if with the necessary, would man know how to content himself. If what she produces is not enough for all needs is because man uses in the superfluous what would be useful in the necessary [...].
In the excellent text “The Sundays needs of holidays”, the rabbi Nilton Bonder explains the sense of the Shabat, evocating questions absolutely important to sustainability: “Beyond a worker proposal, we understand the pause like a fundamental thing for everything that is alive. The night is a pause, the winter is a pause, and even death is a pause. Where there is no pause, the life will be degraded. For a world where it works 24h per day seems not enough, where environment and earth beg for a pause, where we ourselves can’t stand anymore the lack of time, take a rest begins to be a necessity of this planet”.
